| What we experience as contradictory--hate and love, guilt and innocence--are in fact intertwined. In my sculptures I give shape to this vision, in a confronting, obstinate, and dualistic way. Until now all my sculptures are made out of human hair, a material with many associations: beauty and health, but also horror and death.
My work is figurative and recognisable but shape and proportions do not have to be correct or beautiful. What matters is the sensation they evoke. The intent is to arrange a space to create an atmosphere. All of my work is about my dualistic feelings about life and people. You can always view my work in two ways: kind, pleasant and innocent, but also the opposite: frightening, condemning and guilty. The reason why I work with human hair is that hair has symbolic significance: beauty, strength, health, attraction, etcetera. The moment it is separated from the human all these factors turn around, however, and hair is considered dirty, unsavoury and dead. I mix all sorts of hair of all kinds of people; young, old, black or white. Exactly because of the manner in which I process the hair, an average colour (brown) arises: this is the average human.
My sculptures always deal with guilt and innocence, an idea that is not so much about real guilt and innocence, but about the fact that we have a conscience and how we deal with it. I think that we are born as innocent beings and guilt grows as consciousness develops itself. To me each human is responsible for all that goes on in our world. Knowing is being accessory to it.
