"It has been said, "If you like Miro, Caulder, and Dr. Seuss, you will love Mitchell."
About his work Mitchell says, yes, there are flaws in my art, and I don't always hide the way I make things. And yes it's true, there are elements in my pieces that are intentionally made wrong or are intended contradictions. Wheels that are not round, anchors with tines going the wrong way, gears without teeth, and conveyances that look forward, but are propelled backward. The reason for this is rebellion of course. My entire career was spent doing things correct. Why, I don't know, but over-engineered products have always bothered me, so at this stage in my life I sort of like the under=engineered look. It seems to me, that in my art it is much more important to convey feelings and ideas. Even though I sometimes use recognizable elements, I want to think that there are no rules for making my art."
